Vocational Pathways

At emanate Solutions we love vocational education and this education sector struggles at times for the recognition it deserves. The new millionaires in NZ will come from and are coming from this vocational education sector. It’s time parents and career advisers recognised the valuable contribution these industries make to the New Zealand economy.

This is where the apprenticeships live. This month a record 11,000 trainees (apprentices) are in training throughout the country in the building and construction sectors alone.

Vocational Pathways is a visual representation of what subjects, high school students can do to get into a rewarding vocational job. It provides new ways to achieve NCEA Levels 1, 2 and 3 and develops pathways that progress to further study, training and employment. This is particularly important for these students who want to enter into a trade such as chefing, carpentry or none traditional trades such as dance and community services. The pathways provides for 6 main sectors and allows students to think about what subjects to take to help them get into careers they want.

The pathways are:

Primary industries
These is any industry that provides or uses raw materials or plant or animal products for conversion into commodities and products for consumers. Agriculture, horticulture, diary manufacture, seafood industry, landscaping, equine and animal care.

Service Industries
This sector makes up a massive 25 percent of New Zealand’s workforce. It includes hospitality, tourism, hairdressing, physical fitness and finance services. This is the people sector where you get to learn and work with real people in many different sectors.

Social and Community Services
This sector is all about enabling and support. The range of jobs is huge – from monitoring and protecting people and property (as in corrections, defence, or firefighting) to caring for people in need (as in health care, community and social work, medicine, or therapy). You may work outdoors or inside, or moving around from place to place.

Manufacturing & Technology
There is a huge range of jobs and sectors in this sector. From hands-on production and assembly to cutting-edge research, from massive machines and busy production lines to individual crafts or computer design. In this sector employees get to work with huge lumps of metal or delicately assembling tiny component parts, so small you can’t even see them, like in nanotechnology. Work with tools, machinery and equipment or computers. Make mass produced tools or hand crafted designs.

Construction and Infrastructure
Building anything form a garage to high rise apartments. Infrastructure is about planning, designing, building and repairing or maintaining essential services such as roads, bridges, pavements or drains and dams or electrical systems.

Creative Industries
The Creative Industries Pathway is for those people who are interested in visual and performing arts as artists or technicians, or in the design and development of products, including communications & graphic design. This pathway includes film and digital technologies and events development and management, including heritage and cultural advice. Māori and Pacific culture and identity is fully represented in this pathway.

Draft International Education Strategy for New Zealand to 2025

The Draft International Education Strategy for New Zealand to 2025 was released on 30th June 2017 

The draft strategy sets out the government’s proposed vision, goals and immediate priorities for the international education sector through to 2025.

It was developed with input from the international education sector, including an online survey and a series of workshops in 2016 to identify the future challenges and opportunities of international education in New Zealand.  Education New Zealand (ENZ) and the Ministry of Education are leading the strategy development.

Feedback options are explained on the website and include an online survey, a series of workshops for the sector, and a session on the draft strategy during the New Zealand International Education Conference (NZIEC) in August.   Consultation will close on 31 August 2017.  The strategy will be finalised and an implementation plan developed for launch towards the end of the year.

For PTE’s TEI’s are important in answering the Key Evaluative Questions in your External Evaluative Review (EER). The tertiary evaluation indicators (TEIs) have been reviewed. This review involved significant sector input and followed eight years of using the TEIs and learning through experience, as well as new research and information that has become available.

The reviewed TEIs continue to reflect the principles of the Evaluative Quality Assurance Framework and form part of NZQA’s quality assurance processes.

What has changed?

  • Clarified purpose and intent of the key evaluation questions (KEQs)
  • Each KEQ linked to the most relevant indicators.
  • Examples, and improved explanation for each TEI.
  • Advice on how to use the indicators.
  • New TEIs in the areas of data analytics, TEO compliance, and academic integrity.
  • Significant improvements to TEIs related to achievement and outcomes, assessment, student engagement and TEO self-assessment (i.e. strengthening the role of ‘student voice’ in influencing their own education and educational delivery at their organisation).
  • A more consistent approach to issues relating to Māori education and Mātauranga Māori, and to the achievement of priority groups (including students under 25, Māori, Pasifika and foundational literacy and numeracy).
